Advancing Humanity Through Space Exploration and STEM Education

Our Mission

The SpaceX Foundation believes that humanity's future depends on making life multiplanetary. We exist to accelerate this future by removing barriers to space access, inspiring the next generation of explorers, and ensuring the benefits of space technology reach all of humanity, not just the privileged few.
Founded alongside SpaceX's operational growth, the Foundation channels resources into education, research, and humanitarian applications of space technology.

What We Do

STEM Education Pipeline
We fund scholarships, robotics competitions, and hands-on engineering programs for students from underrepresented communities. Our goal: create pathways for talented young people to join the aerospace workforce regardless of zip code or economic background.

Research Grants
We support university research in propulsion, materials science, life support systems, and planetary science. Priority goes to projects with direct application to sustainable space settlement.

Disaster Response
When hurricanes, wildfires, or conflicts sever communication infrastructure, we deploy Starlink terminals to restore connectivity for emergency responders and affected communities, at no cost.

Open Data Initiatives
We publish anonymized telemetry datasets, atmospheric research, and satellite imagery to accelerate scientific discovery worldwide.

Programs

Starship Scholars
Full-ride undergraduate scholarships for aerospace engineering students at accredited universities. Includes summer internships at SpaceX facilities. 50 scholars selected annually.

Mars Curriculum Project
Free K-12 lesson plans, virtual reality experiences, and teacher training resources focused on Mars science and engineering challenges. Used by 12,000+ classrooms globally.

Orbital Farming Research
Grants for agricultural experiments aboard Dragon cargo missions and the International Space Station. Studying how to grow food in resource-scarce environments—knowledge applicable to both Mars and Earth.

Starlink Education
Connecting remote schools to high-speed internet in 45 countries. Over 8,000 schools currently enrolled, with priority for indigenous communities and disaster-prone regions.

Funding Approach

The SpaceX Foundation is primarily funded through:
  • Annual contribution from SpaceX corporate profits (1% of net income)
  • Matching employee donations
  • Partnership grants from technology and aerospace companies
  • Individual philanthropists committed to long-term human survival
We maintain a 12-month operating reserve. Administrative costs remain below 8% of total budget.

Governance

The Foundation operates independently from SpaceX corporate leadership. Our board includes:
  • Two SpaceX executives (non-voting)
  • Three independent aerospace academics
  • Two education policy experts
  • Two representatives from beneficiary communities

Annual reports and financial statements are published each March.
