What We Do

Grant Programs


Research & Innovation Grants

For scientists, engineers, and researchers working on breakthrough technologies in clean energy, space, AI safety, and biotechnology. Awards range from $50,000 to $5,000,000.

Education & Scholarship Programs
For students, educators, and institutions advancing STEM learning. Includes full-ride scholarships, research fellowships, and school district technology grants.

Humanitarian & Direct Aid Grants
For individuals, families, and nonprofits providing essential services to vulnerable populations. These grants require no repayment and are awarded based on demonstrated need and potential impact.

Emergency Response Fund
Rapid-deployment grants activated during natural disasters, pandemics, or humanitarian emergencies. Designed to get resources to the ground within 72 hours.



Application Guidelines


Who Can Apply:

  • Accredited researchers and research institutions
  • Nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status (or international equivalent)
  • Educational institutions and educators
  • Individuals and families facing documented financial hardship (via our Direct Aid Program)
  • Early-stage startups with breakthrough technology concepts

What We Look For:

  • Clear, measurable impact potential
  • Innovative approaches to persistent problems
  • Responsible stewardship of resources
  • Commitment to transparency and reporting
  • Alignment with our core mission areas

We Do Not Fund:
  • Political campaigns or lobbying activities
  • Religious organizations for sectarian purposes
  • For-profit ventures (except through specific innovation challenges)
  • Individuals without documented need or institutional affiliation (except Direct Aid Program)

Governance & Transparency


The Elon Musk Foundation operates with complete financial transparency. We publish annual reports detailing all grant disbursements, administrative costs, and program outcomes. Our board includes leading experts in science, ethics, and international development who ensure our resources are deployed effectively and responsibly.

Administrative overhead: Less than 5% of all donations—meaning 95 cents of every dollar goes directly to programmatic work.
